During these last years, more than ever, we have been forced to spend most of our time in confined spaces such as home, office and school. In a 2013 survey, the World Health Organization evaluated what was the perception that people had about the time spent indoors, compared to that spent outdoors. The result was surprising, showing how on average we spend 90% of our time indoors, underestimating and neglecting the impact in terms of health and well-being that low air quality can have on our bodies. The quality of the air we breathe inside closed environments, in fact, is a very often overlooked factor to which more attention should be paid.
Indoor air pollution is more dangerous than outdoor pollution
When we talk about pollution, we immediately think of air pollution and therefore of the pollution of the air we breathe outdoors.
The truth is that the air inside our homes, offices and other buildings can be 5 to 50 times more polluted than outside. This happens because normal indoor human activities (cooking food, cleaning with chemical agents, etc.) and the substances present in all the furnishing elements, add up to the
external pollutants that are trapped and accumulate in the walls of our homes or workplaces.
Together to all of this, it has been discovered that Exposure to air pollutants – even at levels below World Health Organization (WHO) air quality guidelines – may trigger a heart attack within an hour, according to a new study from China.
The study found exposure to any level of four common air pollutants could quickly trigger the onset of acute coronary syndrome (ACS), where blood supply to the heart muscle is blocked, with the strongest risk within the first hour of exposure.
.
Even scientists studying the impact of fine particulate matter on the respiratory system believe tumors are caused indirectly through structural changes, raising hopes for new treatments.
Strategies for Healthy Buildings
How can we then avoid all of these dangers? At Seeders Media we have explained different strategies for a better and sustainable life, this time the answer is healthy buildings.
Healthy buildings are to be considered as next generation of green building that not only includes environmentally responsible and resource-efficient building concepts, but also integrates human well-being and performance. In 2017, Joseph G. Allen and Ari Bernstein of the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health published The 9 Foundations of a Healthy Building: ventilation, air quality, thermal health, moisture, dusts and pests, safety and security, water quality, noise, and lighting and views.
Seeders Capital covers each of the 9 Foundations of healthy buildings through many different strategies.
